چکیده

Neurofibromas are occasionally present in spinal roots; however, an intramedullary neurofibroma is especially rare. Although a few cases of intramedullary neurofibromas in cervical spinal cord have been reported, to the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of intramedullary neurofibromas in thoracic spinal cord, and moreover, no reports have clearly reported immunohistochemical findings. We report a rare case of a large intramedullary neurofibroma in the thoracic spinal cord and show immunohistochemical examination of the tumor. A 52-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of progressive gait disturbance. Neurological examinations demonstrated complete motor and sensory deficit of his legs. Magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spine demonstrated an intramedullary enhancing mass within the spinal cord between T4 and T5 levels. The patient underwent T3-T6 laminectomy surgery. The dura mater was opened to reveal fusiform dilatation of the spinal cord and a midline myelotomy was performed. An intramedullary mass was revealed and could be resected totally. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor cells exhibited spindle-shaped and wavy nuclei with abundant collagen, which resembled schwannoma or fibrous meningioma. By immunohistochemical examination, some tumor cells were positive for S-100 proteins; however, most tumor cells were strongly positive for CD34. From these pathological findings and immunohistochemical reactions, we diagnosed the intramedullary tumor as a neurofibroma.

A Rare Intramedullary Epidermoid Cyst of the Thoracic Spinal Cord: Case ‎Report and Review of Literature

Epidermoid cyst in the spinal cord is a rare condition. It constitutes of only 0.6-1.1% of all spinal tumors. When they occur, the typical location is in the subdural, extramedullary space of the lumbo-sacral region. We report a forty-two -year-old female who presented with left extremity radicular pain and myelopathy. MRI of the thoracic spine, illustrated a focal fusiform enlargement of the tho...

Clear Cell Ependymoma of Spinal Cord: A Case Report

Clear cell variant of ependymoma is almost exclusively located in the supratentorial region. Only few cases of this tumor that located in the spinal cord have been reported. Here we report one case of intramedullary clear cell ependymoma of the lumbar spinal cord. In microscopic examination, the tumor cells were round to oval with moderate amounts of clear cytoplasm and centrally located lar...

A Large Intrathoracic Mass in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis-1: a case report

Abstracts: Dural ectasia is circumferential expansion or dilatation of the dural sac, and has been frequently reported in association with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1). It should be differentiated from posterior mediastinal tumors such as neurofibroma, neuroblastoma, and ganglioneuroma because NF-1 has a high risk of tumor formation. In the spinal deformities of NF-1 patients, despite the sco...

Spontaneous Resolution of Symptomatic Thoracic Spine Calcified Disc Herniation: A Case Report and Literature Review

Calcification of intervertebral disc (IVD) is an uncommon but well-defined clinical syndrome in children. Despite its benign nature, occasionally, calcified nucleus pulposus can herniate into the spinal canal. We report an interesting case of calcified disc herniation in the thoracic spine. Although it resulted in cord compression and syrinx formation, it well responded to conservative manageme...

Intramedullary capillary hemangioma of the thoracic spine: case report and review of the literature

Capillary hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms. When associated with the spine, these growths frequently involve the vertebral body, but rarely have they been reported to occur as intradural lesions, while even more rarely occurring in a true intramedullary location. We report a rare case of an intramedullary capillary hemangioma of the thoracic spinal cord and a review of the literature.
